“Community is why people move to a location, the houses sell themselves”, says John Howard, Mayor of Monroe. This was his response after I asked him what he thought about the housing market in Monroe. Being the agent at the Reliant community, Retreat at Mill Creek, an in-town, sophisticated Monroe community, this did not come as a surprise to me.
Truly, Monroe is really taking shape! With a winning team like Monroe’s Economic Development Committee and Mayor John, we have seen vast improvements and additions to parks, sidewalks, intersections, Police stations, restaurants, shopping, and a new memorial dedicated to our Veterans.
Monroe is also growing with exciting new & unique restaurants and shopping! This city is a small business entrepreneur’s dream with many of the stores owned and operated by local business owners. You can read more about Monroe’s “Buy Local” initiative here. Your Pie, Silver Queen (Est. Opening: 2019), South on Broad (Est. Opening: 2019), LR Burgers (Est. Opening: 2019), and Major Humphries Brewery(Est. Opening: 2019) are just a few of the restaurants that are and will be calling Monroe home. Local favorites in Monroe include The Cotton Café, Amici, Little Italy, Kaity’s Downtown, Cheely’s and Butcher Block. For a treat, go to Coffee Camper Co., Scoops Monroe, or The Posh Cakery. Monroe offers a variety of shopping including antique malls, mercantile store, book store, clothing stores, and a farmer’s market, on Saturdays during the summer. You can read more about Monroe’s “Buy Local” initiative here.
Not only is Monroe growing it is retaining the growth by offering many community events throughout the year. If you have never been to one of their events, I would strongly encourage you to check one out! Here are some of the yearly events: First Friday Concerts on the Square and Movies on the Lawn, a Chocolate Walk Downtown, Fall Fest in October, Paws in the Park 5k, Food Truck Friday’s at the Monroe Cotton Mills and the Annual Christmas Parade. Other notable community events in Monroe include the Walton County Special Olympics and Relay for Life. You can find these events at www.MonroeDowntown.com.
Does Downtown Monroe look familiar? You might have seen it on the silver screen recently. Monroe has been the backdrop for the Georgia film industry. Nancy Drew, The Hidden Staircase recently used store-fronts from Main Street in the movie’s trailer. Additional films that have used Monroe include Queen Fur & Hidden Figures. Monroe has its very own On-Stage Playhouse, performance art theatre, featuring Monroe finest local talent.
Not only does this city offer options for “play”, but offer great options for education. Our top-notch schools include the Monroe-Area Purple Hurricanes and the George Walton Academy Bulldogs! These schools have outstanding academic and athletic programs. My community, Retreat at Mill Creek, is located in the “hub” of the Walnut Grove School system, which has been recognized for academic excellence in the past.
